## Local knowledge (Mosman specifics)
- **The defining local fact: sewerage works by gravity, and parts of Mosman cannot.** The **low-lying areas around the Balmoral slopes could not gravitate to the outfall sewer**, so they were served by **low-level pumping stations** collecting the sewage and pushing it back uphill through separate sewers called **rising mains**, into the main gravitation system. **Chowder Bay's station was commissioned in 1926**, one of a small group serving the **Mosman Septic Tanks at Balmoral Beach** and later the Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. The **Mosman Bay Sewage Aqueduct** is heritage-listed. Greater Sydney now has **over 600 low-level sewage pumping stations**, all owned and operated by Sydney Water.
- **The plumbing consequence, and the most useful thing to tell a Mosman resident: a pump fails differently from a drain.** A blocked gravity line degrades - slow, then slower, then backing up, usually with days of warning.
